Let’s be encouraged by the progress and planning for an Australian electricity grid that supports 100% renewable energy.
One of the key components in the grid is to have big batteries in the grid. They provide system strength to handle the renewable energy fluctuations and daily cycle of the sun.
The big batteries can do multiple things to support the grid, things we don’t think about much. They can keep the grid frequency steady, keep the voltage steady, pump electricity into the grid if needed, soak up excess electricity if needed, and provide inertia (whatever that is!!).
Now we have the confidence for the coal and gas generators to be shut down. This is being done in a planned fashion obviously. All the things that the fossil fuel generators are doing can be done in a 100% renewable setup.
